The 5 Most Crucial Match-Ups for the 49ers in 2025
All games count the same, but some may be more important than others.
The San Francisco 49ers finished their 2024 season with a 6-11 record, which earned them the easiest schedule of any team in the league for 2025. At first glance, it seems like a cake walk to the playoffs, and possibly a top-seed in the NFC. However, they still face some tough matchups that could foil a should-be playoff berth this season. All games count the same, but once the season gets rolling some games may end up being more important than others.
Arizona Cardinals (Week 11, November 16th)
An NFC West rival, the Arizona Cardinals may not be a team to scoff at this season. After handing the 49ers a tough 24-23 loss in week five of 2024, followed by a devastating 47-24 loss in Week 18, the Cardinals look to capitalize on their fifth-ranked easiest schedule. With analysts calling them a “Dark Horse” playoff team, and a new-look defense that hopes to get up to speed quickly, the 49ers should not overlook this 2025 Cardinal team.
Defense was the clear need for the Cardinals going into the 2025 NFL Draft, and it seems like they addressed it as such. Highlighted by their 16th overall pick Walter Nolen out of Ole Miss, the Cardinals defense has gained a lot of praise over this off-season. Signing players like Josh Sweat, Calais Campbell, and Dalvin Tomlinson to bolster their defensive line, the Cardinals have addressed some major issues of years past. Their secondary will also see improvements, adding second-round pick Will Johnson out of Michigan to the mix, alongside emerging CB Garrett Williams, and seven-time Pro-Bowl safety Budda Baker.
Their offense will continue to look relatively the same, with QB Kyler Murray at the helm, second-year WR Marvin Harrison Jr. getting more comfortable in the offense, the re-signing of Zay Jones, and extension of TE Trey McBride shows that they are comfortable with the offensive side of the ball. The 49ers will tee-off against the Cardinals in Week 3 and Week 11 of the 2025 season, both before their bye-week in week 14.
Seattle Seahawks (Week 1, September 7th)
I feel it is a surprise to no one that the Seahawks would be a crucial divisional matchup for the San Francisco 49ers, especially when it kicks off the season. The 49ers are 4-1 in the regular season against the Seahawks with Brock Purdy as the starting quarterback. They will look to take divisional control early, in case any tie-breaker scenarios were to be at play towards the end of the season. Seattle is projected to be a competitive team in 2025, although they have seen a tremendous amount of change since last year. New head coach Mike Macdonald looks to keep building on a rising defense for the Seahawks, who finished 14th in the league in overall defense per Fox Sports. Combine that with a new WR duo in Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp, things don’t look that bad in Seattle. It all comes down to which version of Sam Darnold are the Seahawks going to get.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Week 6, October 12th)
Emerging as one of the better teams in the NFC, the Buccaneers will be nothing to scoff at in 2025. With projections suggesting they are strong contenders for the NFC South title and a playoff berth, Tampa Bay will look to do exactly what Tom Brady did in 2021.
Led by seventh-year QB Baker Mayfield, the Bucs have one of the most balanced offenses in the league, highlighted by second-team All-Pro selections Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and rising star RB Bucky Irving coming out of the backfield. Key points the Bucs will be focused on this season will be the health of Godwin, the development of second-year WR Jalen McMillan and rookie Emeka Egbuka, and their defensive secondary, who finished 22nd overall in 2024 per PFF.
Overall, the Buccaneers will be one of the tougher opponents for the 49ers in 2025. If they can get past them in the regular season, there aren't many other teams ahead of them in the NFC.
Atlanta Falcons (Week 7, October 19th)
In back-to-back weeks, the 49ers will see two NFC showdowns, although the Falcons are a little heavier on the mixed signals. Atlanta will trot out second-year QB Michael Penix Jr, who replaced QB Kirk Cousins for the final three games of 2024. In those games, Penix completed 58.1% of his passes for 775 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Now as the undisputed starter for 2025, Penix will look to build rapport with his receivers and grow into his role. With position battles on both sides of the ball, particularly at safety and center, there are many question marks on this squad. They will need to establish consistency and harmony on offense with their young quarterback, and provide stellar defense while they take those lumps. The 49ers will host the Falcons on SNF, bright lights in front of the faithful for the young QB.
Los Angeles Rams (Week 10, November 9th)
Saving the most crucial for last, the Rams are projected to be a thorn in the 49ers’ side. With the extension of RB Kyren Williams, the emergence of WR Puka Nacua, and the addition of WR Davante Adams, the Rams look to load up and go for it all in 2025. The health of QB Matthew Stafford is the biggest question mark on this team, who sat out most of training camp and pre-season games with a back injury.
They will also have to overcome a tough road schedule towards the end of their season, having four road trips in their last six games of the season. The Rams have seen the post-season in all but two seasons under head coach Sean McVay since 2017, and this season seems to look no different. The 49ers are 10-5 against the Rams since Kyle Shanahan became head coach, and they look to extend that record in 2025.
Honorable Mention: Seattle Seahawks (Week 18, January 3rd or 4th)
I’m including this matchup assuming the 49ers have not locked up the NFC West division title, or the top-seed in the NFC. This game could be a make or break matchup, depending on how the division standings look heading into the final week of the season.
