More Uncertainly Haunts the 49ers Receivers
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Last off-season, the San Francisco 49ers were locked into a stalemate holdout from star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Those frustrations continued after he signed for a massive $120m deal, starting the season with career-low numbers before his year was cut short by an ACL and MCL injury. Fast forward to the 2025 off-season, there’s still uncertainty surrounding the receiver room as the team looks to rebound from a down season.
Aiyuk’s injury is likely to cost him a portion of the upcoming season. While he’s likely to start the year on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), some reports suggest that he’s ahead of schedule and could return sooner. With his timeline up in the air, it’s still difficult to project his production through a full season, as it often takes a second year to return to complete health from such an injury.
During his recovery, the team was expected to rely on receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall. Pearsall was a first-round pick in 2024, but through a series of unfortunate events, was only able to show flashes in a difficult season. Without an extended look, it’s also hard to project Pearsall’s upside, but after missing OTAs with a hamstring injury, he must first stay healthy before anything else.
Jennings is the more reliable bet for the season, but is now looking for an extension or a trade. He enters the last year of his deal after a breakout campaign saw him step up amid the rash of injuries to the group last season. Looking to be rewarded, general manager John Lynch now has to decide whether to call his bluff or pay up. A trade seems unlikely at this point in the off-season, just before training camp, but another holdout would continue to demoralize fans and leave an air of uncertainty around the offense.
If that wasn’t enough, free agent signing Demarcus Robinson could be facing suspension. The former Los Angeles Ram is coming off a 17-start season and career-high 505 receiving yards, and was likely to hold the team's WR3 position until Aiyuk’s return. However, a DUI arrest last November will likely come back to haunt him now after he pleaded no contest to the charges, paving the path for a suspension from the NFL.
The 49ers were likely aware that Robinson could be facing discipline from the league, but coupled with Jennings' demand, the team is now in a tough situation. Three of the team's top four receivers now have some form of question around them. If they are to start the season without Aiyuk or Robinson, it would be difficult to field a competitive offense without Jennings, either.
The lack of clarity around the receiver position is slightly offset by the current health of running back Christian McCaffrey and the status of All-Pro tight end George Kittle, but it is still incredibly frustrating for fans after dealing with similar issues from Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel in recent years. The 49ers will need some answers soon with training camp set to begin July 22nd.
