Ricky Pearsall’s Perseverance has the Receiver Ready for Breakout Season
Through the trials and tribulations of 2024, the second-year receiver is ready to make an impact in 2025.
With the 31st selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, The San Francisco 49ers surprised many with the selection of University of Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. With needs along both lines, the idea of another receiver was met with criticism among many, but the 49ers had a plan for the future, a plan that would be derailed by the most dire of circumstances.
Coming out of Florida, Pearsall was an ironman, having not missed any games in his final three years between Tempe and Gainsville. That narrative would change as he came into OTAs and training camp, but despite missing his first offseason with the 49ers, the expectation for Pearsall was that he was still going to be a valuable third option behind starters Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Everything would change on a late August Saturday afternoon.
After attending a public autograph signing on August 31st, Pearsall was in downtown San Francisco and was approached by a teenager attempting to rob him of his Rolex watch, and a struggle ensued. That struggle that would almost cost Pearsall his life. After being shot through the chest, an injury that is rarely survived, Pearsall was lucky. The bullet missed all vital organs and medical assistance arrived quickly to provide first aid. Once it was clear that he was stable and on the road to recovery, the question became, would he be able to play football in 2024, if ever again?
Remarkably, Pearsall overcame his injuries and returned to the football field in week 7 of 2024 against the Kansas City Chiefs. While his stat line for that game was minimal, his determination and efforts to get back were inspiring. Two weeks later, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we would see the vision the 49ers had for Pearsall begin to take shape. Late in the first quarter, Brock Purdy would find Pearsall downfield for a long 46-yard touchdown, the first of his career. Despite being on the road, the stadium erupted. It was a moment that many had long waited for and the celebration and emotion in that stadium showed the admiration for Pearsall’s perseverance.
Flash forward several weeks, after fighting through another injury, Pearsall’s breakout game was undeniably against the Detroit Lions. On Monday Night Football against the top team in the NFC, he would deliver a standout performance. With eight catches for 141 yards and one touchdown, Pearsall’s playmaking ability was on display on primetime television for all to see.
“Ricky’s such a good football player and he works the right way. He’s got such natural hands. Such natural route running ability and the game’s not too big for him. Ricky’s biggest thing is just being out there and being able to stack days.” 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan
This offseason began much like how his rookie experience started, with a tweaked hamstring that caused him to miss OTA’s, but Pearsall was cleared to start training camp on time. By all practice reports, Pearsall has regularly been the best receiver on the field for the 49ers. And when he’s shown signs of being a young player, Pearsall has been reported to be making immediate corrections and adjustments with quarterback Brock Purdy to ensure they are in sync with one another heading into the regular season.
This was showcased in the second week of preseason against the Las Vegas Raiders, where Pearsall had 3 catches for 42 yards in limited action. More importantly than those statistics, Pearsall was visibly adjusting mid-route to find soft zones in the defense to help Purdy when he had to break the pocket, allowing for completions and continuing to build the rapport with his quarterback.
The path for Ricky Pearsall is clear. Samuel has moved on to Washington, Aiyuk is still recovering from his ACL/MCL injury, and last year’s leading receiver, Jauan Jennings, is dealing with a calf injury and contract dispute. Putting in offseason work with Purdy, it is clear that Pearsall is ready to take the next step in his career to have a breakout sophomore season with the 49ers.
