Training Camp Notes: Week 2
Two weeks of the 49ers training camp are underway. Here are some recap notes:
You win some and you lose some
On Sunday, the 49ers received some good news that wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was activated off of the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but that was short lived when WR Jauan Jennings suffered a calf injury during practice. Jennings hasn’t been on the practice field since, so no one knows the severity of his injury.
Pearsall seems to be hitting his stride as his chemistry with quarterback Brock Purdy is coming together. He will be a key piece in this offense and the team will be looking for him to take the next step with receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Jennings, still trying to recover.
The only direction you should be looking at is West
CJ West. Remember his name this upcoming season. West, the teams fourth-round pick out of Indiana, has been dominating his peers on the offensive line with his quick jabs and powerful maneuvers. On one rep, he even beat right guard Dominick Puni who is known as a stone wall blocker. Don’t be surprised if West gets more reps throughout the season, especially on run down plays.
Leaning into the edges
Edge rusher Nick Bosa seems like he’s ready for the season to get rolling. Bosa has been dominating in practice and even has beaten All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams on a couple of reps.
On Tuesday, Bosa and right tackle Colton McKivitz had three consecutive impressive reps. On the first rep, Bosa got McKivitz on the ground. McKivitz wanted another shot and won on the second rep. Bosa wanted one more, and they both drew up a “tie” on the last rep. The saying is, “iron sharpens iron”, and that seems to be the case with these two. McKivitz is in the last year of his contract, so he’s hoping to get a big payday either with the team or somewhere else.
First-round pick, Mykel Williams, has been making sure his presence is felt when he’s on the practice field. How long will it take for him to be inserted into the starting role?
“Even if it was a discussion, it wouldn’t take long because look at him,”
Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh had this to say about him as Williams has been winning most of his reps and been playing in the interior on passing down situations. Unfortunately, Williams suffered a minor ankle injury, but the team doesn’t seem to be concerned about it as they want to be cautious with him before the season starts.
Conclusion
The 49ers have a rest day on Wednesday but will be back for three more days of practice. They’re only ten days away from their first preseason game against the Denver Broncos. It will be a great eye test for fans on how the rookies are performing and if the defensive line is that good or if the offensive line is lacking.
Make sure to keep checking our page as we will be providing more updates of 49ers practices during their next rest day.
