The 49ers Win Crucial NFC Matchup in Ugly Fashion
Christian McCaffrey shows off to his old team.
With both teams in a must-win situation, the game was ugly to watch and luckily it was a short one. The Carolina Panthers visited the San Francisco 49ers with the hopes of taking the lead of the NFC South division, while the 49ers were aiming to stay ahead of the pack in the Wild Card race.
The game started off strong for the 49ers’ offense with a 8:43 minute drive and capped it off with a 12-yard touchdown reception to Jauan Jennings after bouncing off of three Panthers’ defenders like a pinball. After that is when the game starts to get weird for both teams.
After the Panthers went three and out on their first offensive possession, Brock Purdy would throw an interception on the first play with a throw intended for Jauan Jennings, but was a little bit behind. Defensive back Jaycee Horn with great coverage on Jennings came up with the pick and the Panthers would start at the 49ers’ 16-yard line with the prime position to score.
Three plays later, quarterback Bryce Young had room to run for the touchdown but opted to throw in the back of the end zone and was picked off by safety Ji’Ayir Brown for the touchback. That was Brown’s first interception since Week 8 of the 2024 season against the Dallas Cowboys.
The 49ers would drive down the field again before Purdy threw another interception intended for Ricky Pearsall in the end zone on third down. The frustrating part on this interception was that Purdy had room to run for the first down and had tight end George Kittle wide open who could’ve possibly scored for him, but Purdy threw a floater and was underthrown to be picked off by defensive back Mike Jackson.
The 49ers defense played lights out as they held the Panthers to another three and out to get the ball back to the offense. A rare Christian McCaffery fumble occurred only to be recovered by his own offensive lineman Colton McKivitz on the first play of the drive. Two plays later, Purdy throws another interception to Jaycee Horn making it three interceptions in the first half alone.
It was a rough first half for both teams and the second half got a bit more interesting as both teams traded touchdowns with McCaffery scoring on the ground with excellent blocking by Kyle Juszczyk and Jake Brendel. Young and the Panthers would answer back with a 29-yard pass to wide receiver Tetairoa McMillian. There was an unnecessary roughness call on the 49ers which led the Panthers to attempt a two-point conversion, but didn’t succeed. Late in the fourth quarter, the Panthers were marching down the field before Brown recorded his second interception of the night to basically seal the win for the team.
There was a scuffle after the game was over between Jauan Jennings and safety Tre’Von Moehrig only to find out that Moehrig gave Jennings a cheap shot in the crown jewels which led to the retaliation that was warranted.
